about

Originally released both as cassette tape and digitally on February 5th 2019 by Crash Symbols
crashsymbols.bandcamp.com/album/umbra-szarsz
Cassettes are currently sold out.

Belgrade composer Marija Balubdžić, aka Umbra, and US producer sZARSz unite for a split that seems heavy, dark, and complex. On the a-side, Umbra mixes vocal experiments and medieval psych, while the b-side tracks from sZARSz are more fevered and cryptic -- like snippets of untranslated cyborg dreams. Both sides have a distinctly baroque feel, that frequently brushes up against the dank gothic atmospheres of dungeon synth. Inspired by Belgrade's rich electronic scene and finished amidst a batch of Nikola Tesla's unseized documents, the combination navigates some of the headier territory between techno and noise.

#5 in Tabs Out Podcast's Top 200 Tapes of 2021

"Umbras fills side A with temperance for a world unleashing its mysteries. sZARSz reaches past the thresholds of sonic patterns, pulling back undiscovered life." -Lost in a Sea of Sound
